Font Engine - Lettering with TrueType and OpenType Fonts

The Embird Font Engine is a vector and typography module that runs in the background of the Embird embroidery software suite. It is designed to bridge the gap between digital typography and machine embroidery, allowing users to convert computer fonts into stitchable designs.

The module functions as a translator: it retrieves the vector outlines of a font on a computer and automatically fills them with stitches.

Font Engine creates embroidery lettering from a virtually unlimited number of system fonts (TrueType and OpenType). It also allows for the conversion of vector files from graphics software into stitches for use in Modder and Digitizing Tools (Studio).

Note: Font Engine is auxiliary module that runs in the background, providing its core functionality to the main user-facing modules.

Key Capabilities

• TrueType and OpenType Conversion: The software can convert any TrueType (.ttf) or OpenType (.otf) font installed on a Windows system, stored in a zipped archive, or located in a font collection folder into an embroidery lettering project.
• Vector Recognition: Beyond text, it can import vector graphics (such as .svg files) and transform them into embroidery objects.
• Glyph Set: Unlike "pre-digitized" alphabets that provide a specific set of glyphs, Font Engine generates stitches dynamically for virtually any glyph.
• Lettering Effects: It allows for the arrangement of text in various layouts, such as text on a circle, adjustable kerning, and envelope transformations.

How It Differs from Standard Alphabets

Standard Pre-Digitized Alphabets:

• Limited number of alphabets and a limited glyph set within each alphabet.
• Scalable, but optimized for small lettering (typically 4.5 mm - 75 mm or 1/6" - 3" for plain typefaces, while ornamental typefaces have a larger minimum size).
• Digitized manually by a human digitizer.

Embird Font Engine:

• Provides access to thousands of TrueType and OpenType fonts, many of which are available free of charge.
• Supports punctuation, vertical lettering, Unicode characters.
• Offers virtually unlimited scaling.
• Converts designs to embroidery using a machine-based expert system.

Both Alphabets and Font Engine support custom text baselines, nearest-point connection, and enveloping (e.g., for monograms).

Why Use It?

For those who frequently perform custom branding, create team jerseys, or produce personalized gifts, Font Engine serves as a significant time-saver. Instead of manually digitizing every letter of a unique font, the software automates the process.

Note: Although the process is automated, users must still consider "embroidery logic." For example, very thin fonts or fonts with serifs may require manual adjustments to achieve optimal results.
